The Rickshaws Wait

This is a hand carved, hand pressed linocut print titled "The Rickshaws Wait, Kathmandu", based in a chaotic street of Kathmandu, Nepal. The city I grew up in, a chaotic urban landscape, an ode to the smells, the sounds and sights you'd see on a daily basis on the streets.

The clatter of the pushcarts as they challenge the motors, the clamors of sellers as they set up their wares, the chatter of a multitude of different languages spoken by different groups of passers-by and the groan of the old and dusty Newari houses; this is the essence of the street life of a bustling Kathmandu street. You might get lost amongst all the signboards, signals, sounds and electric wires. And there stand waiting a line of rickshaws with their drivers softly gossiping amongst one another. The day might pass by without a single customer but they still stand waiting, with their beautiful red decoration and amicable chats.

This is the story of an old Asian city stretched taut to its breaking point by the onslaught of a fast paced development. And in many ways, this is the story of my people, their perseverance and their tenacity.
